A woman suffered minor injuries after a cougar attack on the Sunshine Coast Sunday afternoon.

The BC Conservation Officer Service closed two popular mountain bike trails in Roberts Creek in the B & K mountain bike network, near the forest service road, after the attack.

The woman was mountain biking in the area at about 3:30 p.m. June 11 said a tweet from the service. "The cougar lunged and swatted at the woman, who suffered minor injuries that were treated in hospital," said the tweet which noted that "A group of nearby trail builders arrived moments after the encounter and scared the cougar off."

According to Facebook posts warning locals, the attack happened on the popular iTrail.

Conservation officers and the RCMP conducted a safety sweep, set trail cameras, posted signs and stayed until dark and did not see any cougars, said the tweet. They are there again Monday.

The public is asked to respect the closures and to take precautions to avoid wildlife encounters. Tips for staying safe in areas where wildlife may be present include travelling in groups, carrying bear spray and leashing pets.
