A section of a Surrey highway was closed for several hours after a transport truck caught fire and caused a large diesel spill on Sunday night.

Surrey RCMP and Surrey Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire Aug. 28 just before 10 p.m. on Highway 17 near Old Yale Road.

According to police, a transport truck driver was travelling in the westbound lanes on Highway 17 when they smelled smoke.

"After the driver pulled over, the vehicle ignited into flames,” says Sgt. Kimball Matsumoto.

The subsequent fire resulted in the vehicle sustaining major damage.

Highway 17 westbound lanes were shut down for several hours after a large amount of diesel spilled from the damaged fuel tanks.

An environmental cleanup was done on Highway 17. Crews reopened that stretch of road around 7:30 a.m. Monday.
