Letter: Dilapidated Lucas Centre deserved a second life

Public buildings, like the recently collapsed Lucas Centre, shouldn't be left to rot

Re: Former North Vancouver school roof collapses

Dear Editor:

Government expects residential and commercial property owners to maintain their properties, yet these same bodies have the audacity to allow properties bought, built, and maintained with public funds to languish unused and deteriorate.

This is a waste of public funds and our collective resources.

Why wasn’t the Lucas Centre rented out? Most governments don’t make sudden decisions to put buildings back into use.

A rental could have generated income to maintain the building and property until a decision was made as to how best to use it, such as an alternate school, day care facility, or the building could have been redeveloped for a new school or school board offices.

To even consider selling a public asset such as this land is foolish with the big push for increased residential.

Do the elementary and secondary schools in the District and City of North Van have the capacity to take in the projected number of students anticipated in the new housing developments? I doubt it!
