Multiple people have been assaulted during violent stranger attacks in Vancouver over the last month.
One incident resulted in the death of a 92-year-old man in Chinatown; another involved a Toronto woman who was attacked on the seawall.
The Vancouver Police Department confirmed with Glacier Media there are one to two assaults per day throughout the city that are being classified as stranger assaults.
“The people did not know each other and there was no prior altercation or provocation that led to the assault,” said Sgt. Steve Addison.
Since March 18 there have been five serious stranger attacks where people have been assaulted.
Fatal stranger attack
An elderly Chinatown resident is dead after being assaulted by multiple people in Chinatown.
Police say the man, 92, was found injured in a Downtown Eastside alley on March 18. He was transported to the hospital, where he died on March 31.
Homicide investigators at the Vancouver Police Department took over the case and have identified "several" suspects.
The investigation is ongoing and police said they are committed to finding all of the answers.
Woman and cat assaulted
A 40-year-old Chinatown woman was assaulted by three strangers outside her home on Gore Avenue on April 9.
The victim and the teen suspects were not known to each other.
Police say the teenage girls are aged 15, 16 and 17.
A fundraiser identifies the woman as Angelina and states the woman was sitting on the front steps with her cat Leonard when the attack occurred.
"Ang has been unable to return to work and has no access to short-term disability benefits,” said Kristopher Andersen. "She continues to struggle with the emotional, psychological, and physical aftermath of the attack.”
The three teens were arrested the same day in the Downtown Eastside.
Broken teeth and lacerated bicep
Two people were assaulted by a group of strangers on April 13.
According to police, the incident occurred on Denman Street and seven to nine people were in the group.
One person suffered broken teeth and a lacerated bicep.
The investigation is still ongoing and the suspects have not been identified.
Chased, assaulted three times by stranger
A stranger assaulted a woman who was visiting Vancouver from Toronto as she was walking on the seawall in Coal Harbour.
The Vancouver Police Department confirmed the assault took place on April 15 around 12:30 a.m.
The woman ran from the man and fought him off three times before finally getting the attention of plain-clothes police officers to help her.
She suffered a broken nose, multiple cuts and bruises.
Peterhans Jalo Nungu has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and was arrested. His first court appearance was on April 23.
Injuries trying to intervene
A 61-year-old man was assaulted and has injuries to his head and upper body after trying to intervene a fight.
Police say the incident occurred on April 15 when there was an altercation between a group of people on Robson Street in the West End.
The man was assaulted by a stranger and a 30-year-old man was arrested.
