A man accused of slashing a Vancouver police officer’s leg remains looking for a new lawyer through legal aid after letting an earlier lawyer go.
Solaris Onatta Running Dey, 29, is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and assault of a peace officer with a weapon.
But, when Dey appeared before Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Patricia Stark April 9, Crown prosecutor Christina Godlewska said nothing could happen at the appearance as he needs to do the paperwork to change lawyers.
Dey told Judge Susan Sangha April 2 he needed a CT scan for an emergency chest problem. She said she couldn’t help with that request.
Two uniformed officers were patrolling Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside around 7 p.m. on March 4 when one of them was stabbed in the leg.
A surveillance video submitted to Glacier Media shows a man walking behind two officers on the crosswalk at Main and East Hastings streets.
He can be seen leaning down and lunging towards the officer’s leg, slashing him multiple times before running off.
“Random senseless violence is intolerable and certain people need to be incarcerated,” Vancouver Police Department Chief Const. Adam Palmer said March 4.
The court had earlier heard Dey fired lawyer Janine Sicotte and is in the process of finding a new lawyer.
Lawyer Deborah Carpentier spoke for Dey before Sangha and said he had mentioned lawyer Gloria Ng.
The case returns to court April 23, tentatively for a bail hearing.
