Shot in and around Vancouver, Honsla Rakh is on pace to be one of the biggest Punjabi films of all time.
In fact, less than two weeks after opening, it already is.
It broke a world record on opening weekend, according to Box Office India, with the biggest Punjabi language opening of all time (earning ₹25,000,000 in India). It also showed up in North American theatres, placing seventh in its first week on Canadian and American screens, earning $1.5 million in that time.
Since then, it's continued to rake in ticket sales, grossing around ₹405,000,000, or $6.7 million in Canadian dollars. As of now, it's the fifth highest-grossing Punjabi film of all time.
The film takes place in Vancouver. Star Diljit Dosanjh plays a young father raising his son in and around the city while trying to find love. Co-stars include Sonam Bajwa, Shehnaaz Gill and Gurfateh Singh Grewal as Dosanjh's son.
As it was shot and takes place in Vancouver, the production doesn't hide its setting, as some films do. Recognizable local sights can be spotted, like the Skybridge over the Fraser River and Pier 7 restaurant in the Shipyards area of North Vancouver. The trailer even includes an overhead shot swooping over False Creek.
In India, the Punjabi film industry is smaller than Hindi language films, which dominate box offices and is the focus of Bollywood. Canada is the second-largest consumer of Punjabi films.
