The owners of the new Deep Cove General Store, Caroline James and Jessica Jobst-Smith, pulled back the curtain for the Crier in January, revealing plans to bring the shuttered corner store back to life.
The 110-year-old historical building at the corner of Panorama and Gallant is steeped in Cove history and was one of the earliest homesteads in the area.
James and Jobst-Smith, who live in the community with their families, have filed an application with the District of North Vancouver for the corner store facelift.
The friends and business partners say there are no plans to sell coffee or hot beverages, but rather traditional corner store fare such as fresh produce, milk and candy – with a small collection of tourist souvenirs.
The old home was first converted into a corner store in 1928 and had many names over the years, including Hearts, Mollards Market and recently Panorama Market. In clearing out the old shelves and food cases last summer, the owners discovered an old walk-in meat locker, a stone fireplace and retro signage. ■
