North Shore COVID case counts back on downward trajectory

There is good news this week for the North Shore this week as the number of new COVID cases is back on a downward trajectory.

There were 50 new cases of the virus reported for the North Shore for the week ending June 5.

That’s back down from 83 cases reported the week before and the same number of cases reported two weeks ago – the lowest new case count in two months.

Of the new cases reported this week, 42 are in North Vancouver and 8 are in West Vancouver.

Case counts have been continuing to drop throughout most of the Lower Mainland, including areas like Surrey, Burnaby, Vancouver and the Tri-Cities.

The BC Centre for Disease Control now provides more detailed information about where cases have been occurring, as well as information on vaccination rates.

On the North Shore, that data (which tracked cases from June 1 to 7) showed daily rates of infection have dropped back down in most areas in the past week, with the eastern part of the District of North Vancouver showing the biggest drop, going from 11 daily cases per 100,000 people to 2 cases per 100,000. The rate of new infection rose slightly in Bowen Island and Lions Bay, from 0 to 3 daily cases per 100,000. But overall the rate of infection is now below five daily cases per 100,000 throughout the North Shore.

Among those tested for COVID-19, those who live in the western part of the City of North Vancouver had the highest positivity rate, at nine per cent. Most areas of the North Shore had positivity rates of between 1 and 5 per cent.

Vaccination rates are continuing to creep up, with between 74 and 80 per cent of all North Shore residents over 12 having received one dose of vaccine. The District of North Vancouver has the highest vaccination rates at 79 to 80 per cent. The upper part of West Vancouver, including the British Properties and Caulfeild, has the lowest vaccination rate on the North Shore.

Among older adults, vaccination rates for people over 50 on the North Shore are between 82 and 89 per cent.

According to B.C.’s Centre for Disease Control, COVID variants of concern now make up about 84 per cent of cases in the province, and 93 per cent of cases in Vancouver Coastal Health.

Overall case counts in the province continue to drop with 148 new cases reported on Wednesday, 23 of those in Vancouver Coastal Health. Numbers of patients in hospital with COVID-19 are also continuing to fall.
