One person is dead after an incident in the water off Point Grey Monday afternoon.

Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft Siyay, lifeboat Laredo Sound and a search and rescue inflatable responded to an area off Tower Beach after a vessel had capsized.

Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Victoria said it received a call around 1:30 p.m. and tasked a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter for the aerial search.

A crew member aboard the Siyay told a dispatcher that one person was dead, but the search of the shoreline extending to Wreck Beach continued until 6:20 p.m. A rescue team from the hovercraft was deployed to the area and found the vessel. One of the responders told a dispatcher that he found a “very fresh” fuel spill from a working vessel.

Lt. Michelle Scott of Maritime Forces Pacific Public Affairs, who speaks on behalf of JRCC, said the number of personnel aboard the vessel when it capsized was unknown. Responders eventually confirmed there was only one occupant of the vessel and called off the search at 6:20 pm. Scott said the RCMP has assumed control of the investigation.
