With a stroke of luck and perhaps a dash of a holiday miracle, all cats staying at Richmond Animal Shelter have found their forever homes, except Fred who is headed to foster care.
Krista Shaw, manager of the shelter run by BC SPCA, told the Richmond News this is the first time since the shelter opened in 2021 that all cats have been adopted.
Adoptions slowed down over the holidays, but for some unknown reason, all cats but one at the SPCA shelter managed to get adopted this past week.
This is a huge feat for "many reasons," Shaw explained, as it changes the lives of cats and their new families and shows the community's trust and support in BC SPCA and for the well-being of animals.
"Cats bring so much joy into a home," said Shaw, who has two cats at home that bring her "so much joy and love."
This also means the shelter now has space for new incoming cats needing help, as the No. 5 Road facility only has 20 cat portals.
Shaw added she was thankful for staff who cared for the animals throughout their journeys to find forever homes.
Over the past three years, 821 cats have gone through the shelter and 655 were adopted.
There is just one cat that hasn't been adopted, but he is on his way to foster care.
Fred, who came in as an injured stray, will head to a foster home while he recovers from his injuries. He will be available for adoption after his lingering medical issues are resolved.
