EDMONTON — Charges won't be laid in the death of a 13-year-old Edmonton boy who was part of a February scuffle at a downtown light rail transit station.

The boy died of stab wounds after officers were called on Feb. 5 about a group of people who reportedly assaulted a man and woman in their 30s at MacEwan Station.

He was identified by a family spokesperson as Eric Omeasoo.

Police say while Omeasoo's death has been ruled a homicide, charges won't be laid due to evidence that he was killed in self-defence.

An 18-year-old man, as well as a 15-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, are facing assault and weapons charges.

A statement from Omeasoo's family says they dispute what happened to their relative and are demanding Edmonton police share evidence with them.
