It may have been anything – a scuba tank, a fire extinguisher. But whatever it was, a rusty artillery shell-shaped hunk of metal hauled out of a Deep Cove backyard and seized by police last week wasn’t a threat.
The RCMP’s explosives disposal unit was called to a home on the 2400 block of Caledonia Avenue March 12 after a man found the mysterious device while pulling logs from a creek. Police closed off access to the area for more than two hours as a precaution.
“When we think there is a possibility something is explosive, we will not risk it. We will call them in,” said Cpl. Geoff Harder, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.
The bomb squad took it to a secure location, planted their own explosives on it and blew it up, meaning what the device is and where it came from are likely to remain a mystery.
“We not sure if it was displaced from somewhere else. It was in a creek so it’s possible it was moved. It could have been there for a long time,” Harder said. “I don’t know what it is and I don’t think we’ll ever know to be honest.
